‘Kumbhabishekam' performed

Special Correspondent

SIVAGANGA: Hundreds of devotees on Monday thronged Tirupattur near here to witness the ‘maha kumbabhishekam' of Thiruthali Nathar Temple, being maintained by the Kundrakudi Mutt.

Amid chanting of holy scriptures, Saivite priests led by Pichai gurukkal poured holy water on the ‘kalasams' atop the Rajagopuram, Sri Thiruthali Nathar vimanam tower and Bairavar tower at the auspicious hour of 10.15 am. Special pujas were performed to the presiding deity and others.  The holy water was sprinkled on the devotees by the priests.

The ‘kumbabhishekam' of the 10th century temple, which finds a place in the poems of Thirunavukkarasar and Thirugnanasambandar, was held after a gap of 19 years. The last ‘kumbabhishekam' was held in 1992. The temple, one of the important temples in the region, was renovated at a cost of Rs.1 crore. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR and CE) department of the State government contributed Rs.70 lakh. The remainder was raised through sponsors and donations. The badly damaged walls of the second and third corridors, Raja Gopuram, one of the highest towers in the region, were among those renovated.

Gokula Indira, Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration; S.P. Shanmuganathan, HR and CE Minister; Sri Ponnambala Adigalar, Adheenam of Kundrakudi Mutt, Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam; Sitha. Palanichamy, MLA, Karaikudi; and K.R. Periakaruppan, MLA, Tirupattur, were present.

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram attended the pre-kumbabishekam rituals and ‘yagasala puja' on Sunday.

Besides devotees from different parts of the State, particularly from Sivaganga district, people from Singapore, Malaysia and other counties took part in it.
