TIRUCHI: Thanking Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for increasing the duration of maternity leave from 90 days to 180 days, the Tamil Nadu Elementary School Teachers' Federation has appealed to the government to extend the breakfast scheme being implemented in 35 schools in Tiruchi to government and aided schools across Tamil Nadu. According to the Federation, the scheme covering 2,500 students was being implemented with contributions from philanthropists and service-minded teachers. The Federation called for abolition of the ABL system in Government and aided schools introduced in 2007 and restoration of textbook-oriented learning. It urged the Chief Minister to rectify the grievance of the elementary school teachers pertaining to pay anomalies. Having received pay on par with their Central Government counterparts for 21 years, the teachers in the State were now at a disadvantage. The Federation's other requests included replacement of the contributory pension scheme with the old scheme; and not letting running of government schools under public private partnership. The appeals were articulated by the State president of the Federation K. Kamaraj, General Secretary N. Rengarajan, Treasurer A. Tamilselvan; and State Committee Member S. Neelakandan, at an advisory meeting chaired by the district unit president P. Subramanian on Saturday.
