MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday adjourned to Friday the hearing on an anticipatory bail application filed by Madurai Mayor Thenmozhi Gopinathan in a criminal case registered against her under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC). Justice R.S. Ramanathan adjourned the matter after Additional Public Prosecutor P. Ramar sought time to file a counter affidavit. The judge refused to pass any interim direction despite the insistence of the petitioner's counsel. In her petition, the Mayor said that the case had been registered on the basis of a petition filed by an advocate, Jayaraman, before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court here, accusing her, the Corporation Commissioner and others of failing to take action against the alleged encroacher of a Corporation property behind a community hall at Mathichiyam here. On June 15, the Chief Judicial Magistrate had directed the DVAC to investigate into the complaint and file a report by July 15.
