COIMBATORE: Registration of employees in this region for benefits of the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has seen a manifold increase during April-June this year compared to the same period last year, thanks to the online registration facility. The ESIC is implementing Project Panchdeep, a programme that will computerise the complete functioning of the ESIC and ensure any time, any where service to the beneficiaries. In Coimbatore region, which covers Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and the Nilgiris Districts, employers registered 85,635 employees online from April to June this year for the ESI benefits. This is almost a three-fold increase in registrations compared to the same period last year, according to ESIC officials here. The officials said implementation of the project took off here in November 2009. Workers receiving monthly wages of Rs. 15,000 or less are covered under the ESI. In this region, there are nearly four lakh insured persons and 2.14 of them have so far enrolled for the biometric smart card under the Panchdeep programme.
