Vijayawada
VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials have a prepared a wish-list to be presented to Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who is slated to visit the city on Tuesday. The VMC officials want to ask the Chief Minister to take necessary steps to pay salaries of employees through ‘010' Head of Account (payments through treasury). The corporation had to earmark Rs. 50 crore per annum on salaries of its employees alone. In addition, the VMC would have to shell out another Rs. 20 crore to Rs. 30 crore to pay salaries of contract workers. The corporation would get “great relief” if the permanent employees' salaries were paid by the government, officials feel. The burden of hike in minimum wages of contract employees would be around Rs. 1.2 crore per month. Hitherto, the Corporation is paying around Rs. 1.5 crore per month. The government, a couple of months ago, hiked the minimum wages to Rs.6, 700 per month. The State government has not been regularly releasing non-plan grants and dues under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission programme for many months now. The government released about Rs. 35 crore a month ago. Then, the total dues touched Rs.260 crore, including non-plan grants of about Rs. 30 crore. The State government was due Rs. 205 crore, including the Centre's share of Rs.106 crore, under the JNNURM programme to the corporation. In addition to this amount, the Centre had to release third and fourth instalments. The prestigious housing programme and municipal solid waste management projects taken up under the JNNURM programme are taking a beating with non availability of land. The VMC required 100 acre of land to complete the houses sanctioned to the city. The VMC wanted the Chief Minister to hasten the land acquisition process as the JNNURM programme come to an end in 2012. The issues pending with the railways and the irrigation department were some of the other items on agenda of the VMC officials.
