Was upset with father for buying her a Chinese cellphone

The 15-year-old girl wanted a Nokia model phone

Mother does not take girl's suicide threat seriously

HYDERABAD: Angered over her father buying a Chinese-made mobile phone instead of the Nokia model she had wanted, a 15-year-old girl burnt herself to death at Shivarampally, the police said on Monday.

Daughter of a videographer Sikander Khan, Hinaunnisa picked up an argument with her father on Sunday night as he had bought her the Chinese-made phone. She told her mother Ghousia that she was angry since her father failed to fulfil her wish and would end her life.

“Ghousia didn't take her daughter's threat seriously as the teenager frequently used to tease her saying she would commit suicide over petty matters,” Shivarampally Inspector Uma Maheswar Rao said.

As the parents ignored her threat, the girl suddenly went inside kitchen, doused herself in kerosene and lighted a matchstick.

By the time Khan broke open the kitchen door, the girl suffered serious burns. She was rushed to a hospital where she died while undergoing treatment within an hour. Hinaunnisa was eldest of Khan's four children.
