MYSORE: Lamenting the decline of the reading habit among today's youth, Secretary, Kannada and Culture, Ramesh B. Zalki has said it is due to the onslaught of the visual media. Workshop Mr. Zalki was speaking at a workshop on reading habits, organised by the Kannada Book Authority and the district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, here on Monday. He said steps had to be taken to inculcate the reading habit in school and college students and the Government was committed to it. ‘No dearth of funds' He pointed out that there was no dearth of funds to take up promotion of Kannada. The Government had increased the grant from Rs.10 crore to Rs. 200 crore in the last three years. Sufficient grants had been released to the four academies functioning under the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Government would provide necessary financial assistance in future as well. However, the public should make use of these initiatives, cultivate reading habit and exorcise the scourge of illiteracy and ignorance, Mr. Zalki said. Kannada writer D. Javare Gowda, who presided over the function, underscored the role of teachers in inculcating the reading habit in children. Chairman of the District Kannada Sahitya Parishat Madikere Gopal and Director of Archaeology and Museums R. Gopal were present.
