THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Power Ministry has sanctioned Rs.29 crore for the implementation of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for the power distribution network in Thiruvananthapuram city. Union Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal stated this at a press conference after a review of the Central programmes in the State's power sector here on Monday. He said the system would optimise the performance and efficiency of the electricity distribution network in the city, in the technical and the commercial sense. It involved computer networking the power distribution network to monitor and control it. Electrification He said the Centre had sanctioned Rs.135 crore under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) for achieving total electrification in seven northern districts of the State, besides giving electricity connection free to over 56,000 below-poverty-line (BPL) families. The State would now submit a proposal to include the remaining seven districts in the programme aimed at total electrification of the region. Under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme (R-APDRP) for improving the power transmission and distribution system, the Union government had sanctioned Rs.369 crore for Kochi and Kozhikode cities. A survey preparatory to the introduction of the programme in Thiruvananthapuram city was in progress and would be completed before November this year, Mr. Venugopal said. State Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed, who too attended the review meeting and addressed the media, said the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had posted an officer of the Chief Engineer's rank to monitor the Centrally sponsored schemes in the power sector in the State.
