Ramanjaneyulu pulls up sanitary officials

VISAKHAPATNAM: Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu sees scope for a 25 per cent increase in the revenue of the corporation.

Against a population of 19.83 lakh the number of tax-paying households is more than 3 lakhs. Going by the national parameters it should be around 4.5 lakhs.

But tax could be expected from at least 4.25 lakh properties. Besides, more revenue can be realised from vacant land tax.

Also, officials said there was scope for reducing costs by Rs.25 lakh in water transportation.

Mr. Ramanjaneyulu told reporters here on Monday that there appeared to be a gap of 30 per cent between the outsourced sanitation workers on rolls and those attending work.

At Pedajalaripet, only 14 names of workers were given against a total of 52. “People are not satisfied.

The issue would be discussed with the unions and streamlined,” he said.

During his visit on Monday at Pedajalaripet, the Commissioner ordered that a charge memo be issued to the sanitary inspector concerned. Also explanation should be sought from assistant engineer Sankara Rao for the bad shape in which a new road was found there and also take action against the contractor.

On pressures on officials who go by the book, he said he would stand by them. “Barring the Standing Committee meetings, I will answer in the other meetings, including the general body,” he said.

Town planning meet

Mr. Ramanjaneyulu called for a meeting of the officials of the Town Planning wing later in the week.

They should come with a list of buildings being constructed in violation of the rules. If the corporation has no problem, they should be continued but paying the necessary penalty. In the other cases, demolition should be taken up.
