17 illegal studio flats at Games Village demolished

Staff Reporter

Constructed in the upper basement of residential towers

NEW DELHI: Property developer Emaar MGF has completed demolition of 17 studio flats which were illegally constructed in the upper basement of residential towers at the Commonwealth Games Village here.

Following the demolition, the Delhi Development Authority said that while revised construction drawings of some of the towers have been submitted by the property developer, the agency is expecting the remaining drawings in the coming days.

Emaar MGF had announced in May that it had consented to the demolition to “clear all hurdles in receiving completion certificates” for the 457 flats in its possession. The company said this was being done in the “interest of their customers” who had purchased flats from them but were waiting for its delivery after legal wrangles between the developer and the DDA began.

A DDA spokesperson said there was no timeline for issuing of completion certificates and the agency was looking to hand over the flats at the earliest but wanted to ensure that no “structural defects were left and that everything is as per the building by-laws and Delhi Master Plan-2021”.

Regarding the 700-odd flats in the DDA's possession out of the total 1,168 flats, the Authority at its last meeting in May had forwarded to the Union Urban Development Ministry a proposal seeking approval of amendments to be made in the Authority's housing regulations to enable the sale of flats to public sector undertakings and other government bodies.

The DDA will first put up 100 flats for auction to the general public to ascertain the market price before commencing the sale of the remaining flats to government agencies, if the proposal gets the approval of the Ministry.

Regarding the athletics track, football ground and gym at the village, it is learnt that the DDA is framing a policy for use of these sports facilities by the public.

Meanwhile, verification of documents of successful allotees for the DDA's 2010 Housing Scheme is progressing at Vikas Sadan. Earlier, many allotees had complained that verification letters had not reached them, following which the DDA issued a press statement informing allotees that they can proceed for document verification without waiting for the letter to reach. The verification is expected to continue until June 30.
