Landowners agitated over move to issue loans to tenant ryots

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: Farmers' leaders appealed to the government not to make hasty decisions on the issue of providing bank loans to tenant farmers as any small mistake will spoil cordial relations existing traditionally between owners and tenant farmers which will lead to serious repercussions in rural agriculture.

There are many doubts on the proposed process of revenue officials in village giving certificates saying tenant farmers are cultivating in particular survey numbers of land so as to enable them become eligible for crop loans from banks. Though the government was broadly indicating that owner's land would not be given as security, the entire process was creating doubts among farmers, they said.

“The farmers do not trust this. This amounts to nothing but interference of the government and it will create many more problems in future,” said P.S.R. Das, general secretary of the Kisan Service Organisation Krishna district unit.

He said that nobody would be against sanctioning bank loans to tenant farmers but necessary steps should be taken not to assure the landowners who are the passbook holders. Till now, there was good mutual understanding between passbook holders and tenant farmers, which should not be disturbed in the best interests of overall agriculture.

Federation of Farmers Association Krishna district secretary Y. Hanumantha Rao said that there should be suitable amendments to the Tenancy Act so that the landowners would not have any problems regarding ownership rights even if bank loans and government subsidies were given to tenant farmers under any scheme or programme.
