Udupi: Janata Dal (Secular) State unit general secretary Basanagouda Patil Yatnal said on Monday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was dividing society on the lines of caste and religion. Mr. Yatnal told presspersons that the statement of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa that the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had divided the Vokaliga community into two groups was baseless. It was Mr. Yeddyurappa who had divided the Lingayat community and sidelined Lingayat leaders in the BJP such as S. Mallikarjunaiah and B.B. Shivappa so that he himself would remain as the only Lingayat leader. Under Mr. Yeddyurappa, corruption had reached its zenith in the State. BJP leaders were making money from ore mining, sand mining, and road contracts. No housing had been provided to poor people affected by the devastating floods in north Karnataka in October 2009.
