Gowda for bringing PM under Lokpal

NEW DELHI: The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, on Monday lent his support to the Anna Hazare-led group's demand that the post of Prime Minister be brought under the ambit of the Lokpal Bill. He, however, cautioned against any haste in enacting legislation.

The Janata Dal (Secular) president told reporters here, “All politicians in the country are looked at by people with suspicion. Prime Minister of Deputy Prime Minister, everybody should be brought under its purview.”

At the same time, he warned that law should not be enacted in a hurry. “There should not be any loophole. It should be a model one. If you want a pucca law, it cannot be done hastily. Other laws must also be amended. The People's Representative Act must also be amended.”

Mr. Gowda called for a mechanism to prevent corruption in judiciary. Stressing that the Judicial Accountability Bill was not enough to ensure a corruption-free judicial system, he said there was need for a judicial commission or some such mechanism.

An “alert” media had taken up the battle against corruption, but it was turning a blind eye to the “large-scale” corruption under the Bharatiya Janata Party rule in Karnataka.
