TIRUCHI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was accorded a rousing reception by enthusiastic party cadre and leaders during her thanksgiving visit to rural parts of Srirangam Assembly constituency on Monday. Women and children stood in serpentine queues on either side of the road at several points along the over 40 km distance and waved their hands enthusiastically to the Chief Minister as the convoy passed by. Starting off before 4.00 p.m., the Chief Minister spent a few minutes at each of the over 10 spots to thank the electorate for the huge victory margin and for becoming the Chief Minister for the third time. Welfare schemes She promised to implement the welfare schemes worth Rs. 190 crore under the first phase in the constituency and other election promises promptly. Ms. Jayalalithaa addressed party cadre at Kambarasampettai, Mutharasanallur, Allur, Jeeyapuram, Tiruparaithurai, Perugamani, Kavalkaranpalayam, Pettaivaithalai, Jeeyapuram, Periyakarrupur, Kuzhumani, Koppu, Ettarai and Somarasampettai, and wound up her tour within less than four hours. High turnout of people was witnessed at Pettavaithalai, Kuzhumani and Somarasampet. Minor fire K. A. Sengottaiyan, Agriculture Minister; Natham R. Viswanathan, Electricity Minister; N. R. Sivapathi, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister, P. Kumar, MP, and a host of MLAs and other party leaders accompanied the Chief Minister. At Pettavaithalai, sparks from bursting crackers landed on a thatched roof causing instant fire. Police personnel acted in time and doused the flames. 2 cases withdrawn A Sessions Court in Chennai has permitted the withdrawal of two criminal cases against Chief Minister Ms.Jayalalithaa for allegedly defaming former Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. Principal Sessions Judge P.Devadoss allowed petitions seeking to withdraw the complaint which was filed during the DMK rule by the then City Public Prosecutor. In his order, the Judge said he was allowing the petitions and permitting the withdrawal of the prosecution.
