Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Tuesday that transparency and honesty in administrative procedures would help root out corruption. He was inaugurating a function organised to honour Gandhians in connection with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Kerala Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi.

Mr. Chandy said a transparent administration would go a long way in minimising the chances of corruption.

“It is time we introduced an attitudinal shift focussing on the theme that people are the real masters and the rulers, mere trustees. Gandhiji's message to the world stressed the need for society to react against injustice and crime,” he said.

Mr. Chandy said the government would do everything possible to curb the menace of alcoholism and tobacco abuse. He said the Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi could spearhead a campaign against such bad habits. He reminded the gathering that one of the first actions of the UDF government was to declare a pension of Rs.2,000 for those involved in the promotion of Khadi and Hindi.

The Chief Minister honoured three veteran Gandhians, namely Chooloor V. Bhaskaran Nair, E. Narayana Pillai, and K.P. Madhavan Nambiar.

Chairman of the Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi P. Gopinathan Nair presided over the function. Working chairman N. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the Gandhi Darshan programme for schoolchildren.
