Cyclone shelter to be renovated
Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM: Collector C.T. Manimekalai has directed officials to carry out repair works at the cyclone shelter in Koonimedukuppam, located off East Coast Road.
After inspecting the shelter on Tuesday, she told the officials to sink a borewell and fix an electric motor. The entire campus should be spruced up and adequate electrical fittings fixed, she added.
Later, Ms. Manimekalai inspected three boats that ran aground and got damaged in strong wind during the last three days. When she asked the fishermen whether they had insured the boats, they replied in the negative.
The Collector instructed the assistant director of the Fisheries Department to enlighten the fishermen about the importance of insurance.
Ms. Manimekalai also visited a government school and spoke to students. She then went to a noon meal centre and inspected the food prepared for 400 students.
On her way to Koonimedukuppam, she noticed an overhead tank overflowing and leaking at many places. The tank is being maintained by the local body.
As the tank operator was not present there, the Collector ordered his suspension for dereliction of duty.
