Mysore: Eleven persons died of AIDS and 54 were detected with HIV infection, including four pregnant women, in Kodagu, in the first quarter of this year, according to information received on Tuesday.

As many as 5,696 persons underwent tests for HIV infection in the district and it was revealed by the Kodagu District AIDS Control Officer, K.G. Siddaiah, at a quarterly coordination meeting, presided over by the Deputy Commissioner K.M. Chandre Gowda, an official release said.

Dr. Siddaiah stated that nearly 43 persons had registered names with the Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) centre in Madikeri for treatment, of which 37 were undergoing treatment. Three of the four pregnant women had delivered of babies and mothers were injected with Nevirapine injection during delivery, to prevent infection to the babies, he said.

Of the 230 persons who underwent check-up for Tuberculosis, 19 were diagnosed with the disease. Of the 19 persons, four had been infected with HIV as well, Dr. Siddaiah said.

And those four persons were given ART and TB medicines.

Mr. Gowda called upon the Department of Health and Family Welfare, a non-governmental organisation, to provide treatment to the HIV and TB affected persons. Treatment should be done with a human touch and without any discrimination, Mr. Gowda said.

Utmost care should be exercised by the Department of Health to prevent the spread of HIV in the district, he said.

Representatives of the NGOs, who were present, gave an account of the programmes taken up by them to educate the people on the pernicious effects of the diseases in rural areas.
