Kolkata: Supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) clashed with the police at Hansdiha village in Pandabeshwar of West Bengal's Bardhaman district on Tuesday in which the local CPI (M) MLA was injured along with several other party supporters and police personnel. The CPI(M) supporters were agitating against the acquisition of land for setting up of a open-cast colliery by the Eastern Coalfields Limited in the area. Trouble broke out when a huge posse of police personnel tried to disperse the group of around 150 agitating persons. While the CPI (M) leaders alleged that the police personnel baton-charged the supporters, the police refuted the claim and charged the CPI (M) supporters of pelting stones at the police contingent. Local CPI (M) MLA Gouranga Chattopadhyay and CPI (M) MP Bangsagopal Chowdhury were reportedly injured in the incident. Condemning the attack, party State secretary Biman Bose has demanded stern measures against the police officials as well as the ECL authorities. He also demanded an immediate halt in the land acquisition by the ECL. The CPI (M) has called for a 24-hour-bandh in the Ranigunj-Jamuria-Pandabeshwar coal-belt on Wednesday.
