New investor interest in Bengal, says US Consul

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: There is a new interest in West Bengal from US investors following the formation of a new government, US Consul General in Kolkata Beth Payne said. “Americans are watching West Bengal,” she said.

Investors were looking for transparency and security of their investments and a conducive investment climate. They were enthused about the high education levels in these parts, she said.

Participating in an interactive session on ‘Win-Win Benefits of Indo-American Trade' organised by the Merchants Chamber of Commerce here on Tuesday, she said that she has already had a round of talks with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee and Finance Minister Amit Mitra.

“I am keen to hear from the government the sectors where investment would be welcome,” Ms Payne said adding that she has travelled intensely throughout the State during her stay here and felt that the areas which held potential included tourism and agro processing, among others.

The US Consul General, who sat through the two hours of the Chief Minister's interactive session with the industry on June 18, said that the meeting showed an openness which is appreciated by industry.
