TIRUCHI: The free rice scheme has evoked overwhelming response in the district with about 80 per cent of the rice for the month of June being distributed in the first 20 days of the introduction of the scheme under regular and Antyodaya Anna Yojana schemes at fair price shops . The Cooperation Department is running 1,093 ration shops in the district – full time shops 852, part-time shops 240 and mobile shop one. About 6.17 lakh ration cards under the regular rice scheme and another 72,013 cards under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) scheme are attached to these shops. A total of 9,343 metric tonnes of rice were distributed to 4,98,140 card holders under the general scheme and 2,029 metric tonnes of rice to 53,253 card holders under the AAY scheme, till June 20. The off take of rice for the whole last month was 80 per cent. But during this month, off take so far was 79 per cent for regular scheme and 80 per cent for AAY scheme, R. M. Jeyam Pandian, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, told The Hindu here on Tuesday. Referring to the overwhelming response, he said since good quality rice is distributed, all sections of society are taking advantage of the scheme. Special squads have been formed to ensure the smooth implementation of the scheme and check irregularities, and the personnel attached to the squad conducted surprise inspection of the ration shops regularly, he added.
