Only 138 houses by private parties ready

Houses constructed for flood victims in Mudhol taluk of Bagalkot district.

BIJAPUR: To provide a permanent solution to flood-affected villages on the banks of the Don river, the State government had decided to completely relocate 22 villages and partially relocate 19 villages in Bijapur district by constructing a total of 6,651 houses with the help of private organisations that had shown keenness in constructing Aasare houses.

Of the 6,651 houses, four private organisations had decided to construct 1,194 houses in Ukumnal village, Ramnalli, Arjunagi B.K., Naad B.K., Gubbevadathi, Shirgur Inam, Hadaginhal and Kotyal villages. They have completed work on 138 houses in Arjunagi B.K. and Naad B.K. and handed over the houses to the flood victims. Speaking to The Hindu on work in the remaining villages, Deputy Commissioner S.S. Pattanshetty said that the identification of land in two villages — Agarkhed and Chickgarasangi — was delayed for almost a year as residents had approached court demanding more compensation for land being acquired for the construction of houses.

“Now the issue has been sorted out in court and construction of 248 houses in these two villages would begin shortly,” he added.

The major reason for delay in construction of houses in the other villages was improper approach roads. As there is black soil in most of these villages, heavy vehicles transporting construction material find it difficult to cross them during the rainy season.

Work was almost stopped for two months during the last rainy season.

Another hurdle in construction of houses was the State government's decision to ban stone quarrying.

Sources said that in Bagalkot district private organisations have completed work on 1,090 houses as on June 15 and handed them over to beneficiaries. Work on 1,745 houses is nearing completion.
