Deve Gowda to go on a 9 to 5 fast

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Hassan MP and Janata Dal (Secular) supremo, H.D. Deve Gowda, will lead a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Hassan on Wednesday to protest against the BJP Government for stopping development works in Hassan district.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Gowda alleged that all the development works taken up by the BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government had been stopped and despite repeated appeals, no attempt had been made to resume the works.

Though district in-charge Minister V. Somanna had promised to release funds for the works, he had not kept his word. “There is no way to draw the Chief Minister's attention other than by going on a fast for the people I represent,” Mr. Gowda said.

The ambitious Hassan-Bangalore Railway line had been delayed due to the apathy of the Government in acquiring land for the project. Similarly, no attempt had been made to complete work on the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, he lamented.

“I will fast from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. along with elected representatives. In case the Government refuses to respond even after one week, the party will take a decision on its future course of action,” he said.

Mr. Gowda said that the residents of Suregava village of Bagalkot district were suffering due to environmental pollution.

He said that the Government would be given time till July 10 to address their problems

Lokpal Bill

Mr. Gowda said he favoured bringing all public offices, except the office of the President, under the purview of the Lokpal Bill.

All political leaders must be brought under the purview of Lokpal Bill to regain the confidence of the people, he said.
