Strive for permanent livelihood, SHGs told

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Self-help groups should not indulge in just internal lending or borrowing but take tangible steps to facilitate permanent livelihood, said C.T. Manimekalai, Collector.

She was addressing a training programme on various profitable pursuits of SHGs drawn from places such as Alapakkam, Panichamedu, Keezhputhupattu, Anumanthai, Chettikuppam and Bommaiyarpalayam on Tuesday.

Based on market requirements, SHGs should select their products or services. In this connection, the district administration would arrange for expert guidance.

Ms. Manimekalai said it had come to her notice that certain members who failed to return the money borrowed from the SHGs were not entertained anymore by the groups concerned.

Same was the situation with banks as they would shy away from the SHGs that would default on servicing loans. Therefore, the Collector called upon SHG members to be circumspective in selecting their products and prompt in repayment.
