Parched habitations in seven panchayats get potable water daily

Staff Reporter

From Wednesday, daily water supply is being provided following a coordination meeting

KARUR: Work to provide uninterrupted power supply to the pump house and sump at Chinnamalaipatti in Karur district has ensured that 44 habitations in seven panchayats in the backward and parched Krishnarayapuram Union in Karur district would get daily supply of Cauvery water.

The Combined Water Supply Scheme, operated by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, provides potable Cauvery water to a total of 44 rural habitations in Thirukkampuliyur, Sithalavai, Manavasi, Sengal, Muthuranganpatti, Balarajapuram and Ranganathapuram panchayats in the krishnarayapuram Union.

However erratic power supply thrust a discontinuity in the sequential operation of the pumping houses and the sumps that convey water to the distant habitations from the source off River Cauvery. Due to that factor 13 of the 44 habitations in Balarajapuram, Manavasi and Ranganathapuram panchayats could not be supplied with water on daily basis, according to District Collector P. Shobhana.

Disrupted water supply had put the public of the villages to great trouble as they could not get enough water even during the days they were supplied water.

The TWAD Board, along with the Karur district administration, had urged the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to make available uninterrupted power supply to the wayside pump houses and sumps to facilitate regular supply.

The TNEB officials obliged the TWAD Board authorities and made provisions for continuous power supply and thus paved the way for daily water supply to the habitations.

From Wednesday daily water supply is being provided following a coordination meeting chaired by Ms. Shobhana in which TWAD Board Executive Engineer E. Rajakumar, TNEB Assistant Executive Engineer Angamuthu, and Revenue officials participated.

The Collector said that the CWSS would benefit 22,400 people and in particular the 7,000 people in the badly hit 13 habitations. They now stand to gain due to the quick efforts of the officials, she observed.
