‘A few organisations are extorting money from doctors, hospital authorities'

Stern action sought against those who

assault doctors

Dissent:Members of the district unit of the Indian Medical Association taking out a rally in Chitradurga on Wednesday.

Chitradurga: The district chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) took out a rally demanding that the Government provide tight security for doctors who had been assaulted several times for alleged medical negligence, here on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the association held a press conference in this regard.

On the rise

Ravindra, secretary of the association, said that of late cases of assault had been increasing, making it difficult for doctors to function.

He said that in many cases patients were brought to the hospitals in a very critical stage.

“Doctors do their best to save the lives of patients, but the treatment may fail some times . Then, the relatives blame the doctors and attack them, and also vandalise hospitals,” he remarked.

Dr. Ravindra also accused some organisations of playing dirty games. Without naming them, he alleged that a few, in the guise of social work, were taking advantage of the situation and extorting money from doctors or hospital authorities. .

Such organisations were only making the job of doctors more difficult.

“Government hospitals are facing shortage of doctors. If cases of assault on doctors keep increasing, it would only harm the patients, most of who come from rural areas,” he said.

Urging people to understand the situation of doctors, Dr. Ravindra demanded that the Government take stern action against those who assaulted them.

President of the association, Shashikala, was present.
