SOPT VISIT:Tuticorin Collector R. Selvaraj inspecting the Maruthur dam in Srivaikundam taluk on Wednesday. Tuticorin: Tuticorin Collector R. Selvaraj inspected the water bodies at Marudhur and Srivaikuntam under Srivaikuntam block here on Wednesday. The Collector took stock of the condition of the channels and ascertained the flow of water to benefit the farmers. He enquired with officials from the Department of Agriculture about the extent on the flow of water to various tanks under the block. Inspection was made at two channels at Marudhur. Main channels Subsequently, the Collector inspected the south and north main channels in Srivaikuntam. He asked to the officials of the Water Resource Organization (Public Woks Department) to ensure prompt supply of water to farmers. Since the season was conducive to irrigate banana cultivation, farmers could utilise the water resources to raise the standing crop, he said. Farmers were engaged on more than 17 acres of banana fields for cultivation. Mostly, banana fields are available in Karungulam, Srivaikuntam, Alwathirunagari and Tiruchendur blocks. The Collector also inspected the ongoing bridge works in Srivaikuntam, according to a statement here on Wednesday.
