BELLARY: A live interventional cardiology workshop was organised as part of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme by the Association of Physicians of India (API), Bellary chapter, in association with the B.K.S. Premratan Cardiac Centre, Bellary, to mark its first anniversary, here recently. Coronary angiogram and coronary angioplasty using a stent were performed on patients who suffered heart attacks, which was witnessed by doctors in and around Bellary. Cardiologist Nagaraj Desai demonstrated the angioplasty, in which he used a drug-coated stent to open a major vessel in the heart of a patient who had a heart attack. The unique feature of this procedure was that it was done using an artery in the hand (radial artery) rather than the conventional artery in the leg (femoral artery), Dr. Desai said. According to him, this procedure was more comfortable for the patient and can be mobilised early. It facilitates early discharge besides reducing the hospitalisation time as well. Advancements Cardiologist from Hyderabad, Rajendra K. Jain, demonstrated another case of angioplasty with a stent to open a blocked artery at the back of the heart. With the availability of latest and refined hardware, procedures such as these, which were hitherto available in metros, could be brought to the doorstep of tier-II cities as well, he said. This would benefit patients at large and avoid the hassle of travelling, he added. Inaugurating the CME, Tekur Ramanath, physician, underlined the need for doctors to keep themselves abreast of the advancements in the rapidly changing field of medical science. A.G. Ravikishore, interventional cardiologist from Narayana Hrudayalaya, spoke on arrhythmias. Y. Shivakumar, interventional cardiologist from KIMS- and Mahaveer Hospital, Hyderabad, spoke on electrocardiogram. Dr. Rajendra Jain spoke on the latest clot-busting medication used in treating heart attack. B. Devanand, director, VIMS, Bellary, commended the organisers for holding such a workshop, the first of its kind in the city. A. Srinivas Murthy, principal, VIMS, Bellary; B.K.S. Murthy, senior physician; and B.K. Sundar, secretary, API, Bellary chapter, were also present. Ajith Kulkarni, president of API, Bellary chapter, welcomed the gathering.
