spot clearance: S. Rajendran, Tahsildar, listening to grievances of a couple on family cards at the taluk office in Pudukottai on Wednesday. PUDUKOTTAI: A record 12,000 petitions pertaining to ration cards, old age pension, community certificates and other certificates have been attended to in just 20 days at the taluk office here, courtesy a fast track grievances redress system introduced recently. Genuine demands of the public are conceded on the spot and the ration cards with some alterations such as inclusion of names, deletion and change in address were issued on the spot. “Petitions pertaining to family cards outnumber the other grievances every day. On an average, we dispose 400 petitions every day,” said S. Rajendran, Tahsildar, explaining the impact of the redress system on the public. One of the beneficiaries P. Santha, a widow from Tiruvalluvar Nagar, said her old age pension remained suspended since mid-2005. She got an order restoring the pension on Wednesday within a couple of minutes. Mr. Rajendran has been avoiding middlemen in the redress mechanism. “In most cases pertaining to family cards, every middleman possessed dozens of cards. I advise the individuals to directly appear with their applications and get their grievances redressed,” he said. While petitions are received in the morning from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the family cards with due corrections or entries and other certificates are distributed between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. The online registration of the SSLC mark-sheets with the employment exchange warrants certain corrections in the family cards, especially with regard to the details in residential address. “It has resulted in an overload for the taluk office,” he said.
