Railway staff warn of stir

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: Railway employees owing allegiance to Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) have alleged that very little progress has been made in projects for railway electrification in North Kerala. They also sought better facilities at the Kozhikode railway station.

The union warned on Wednesday that a full-scale agitation would be launched if vacancies in railway offices in North Kerala region were not filled without delay and action to improve railway facilities in the region was not speeded up. The DREU will hold a satyagraha on July 12 in Mangalore, Kanhagad, Kannur, Kozhikode, Tirur, Shoranur and Palakad.

Accusing the railway authorities of neglecting railway development, K Asokan, central vice-president of the union, said in a statement here that though it was decided in 2009 to undertake electrification of the railway line in North Kerala, the project had not taken off . Budgetary provision for the project was made in the last two years. The electrification of 20-km line under the project that was scheduled to be completed by March this year had not been completed. He said there was an urgent need to upgrade railway lines in the State so that trains could run faster. The DREU had also stressed the need to recruit more staff to fill existing vacancies as it was necessary to improve safety of passengers.
