100 fall ill after consuming contaminated water

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: About 100 people of Achutapuram village in Nizampatnam mandal have fallen ill after consuming water from a sump belonging to the Rural Water Supply Department. The sump had not been in use for about 15 days.

When water was supplied from it again on Wednesday those who consumed it started complaining of fever and dehydration. Some of them were bed-ridden but there is no danger to their lives.

As news of the incident spread, officials of the Medical and Health Department quickly swung into action and set up a special medical camp in the village. Medicines and IV fluids were given to them.

Doctors and para-medical personnel stayed there to ensure that the villagers' health did not deteriorate. District Medical and Health Officer M. Gopi Naik is monitoring the situation.
