Three farmers create a flutter

Climb cell tower alleging injustice in distribution of input subsidy

Names of the farmers are not in the list of beneficiaries

MLA and MLC pacify them by promising to look into their problem

RAJAHMUNDRY: Three farmers from Katheru created a flutter for over two hours on Wednesday by climbing up a cellphone tower in the village in an attempt to jump to death alleging injustice in the distribution of input subsidy.

They relented only after Rajahmundry Rural MLA Chandana Ramesh of the TDP, MLC Kandula Durgesh, and Rural MRO Suryanarayana promised to look into their problems.

Mr. Durgesh said three tenant farmers — Duddukuri Satyanarayana, Maddipoti Doraiah, and Uppuluri Veerraju — had obtained loans of Rs. 25 lakh, Rs. 14 lakh, and Rs. 10 lakh respectively from banks. After the government announced input subsidy, all farmers received cheques in accordance with their loan amount. However, the names of the three farmers were reportedly not there in the list of beneficiaries.

The farmers reportedly approached the officers concerned but failed to get any assurance from them, he said. Vexed over the issue, they climbed up the cell tower and threatened to take the extreme step if their demand was not met.

On knowing about the incident, Mr. Ramesh, Mr. Durgesh, and the Rural MRO reached the spot and pacified the farmers. Mr. Ramesh accused the Congress government of failing to look into the genuine problems of the farmers and promised to give Rs. 40,000 from his own funds to the aggrieved in a bid to alleviate their problem.

Rebutting the charges, Mr. Durgesh said it was the Congress government that announced input subsidy. Mr. Durgesh said he would take the issue to the notice of the district Collector.
