NEW DELHI: Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday evening amid speculation that his party might seek Congress support. Emerging from the meeting, he, however, refused to take any question from the waiting presspersons. Despite repeated efforts of the reporters, he stoically maintained that it was just a courtesy call. Mr. Rangasamy, who broke away from the Congress and formed his own party, All India N.R.Congress [AINRC], a few months before the recent Assembly elections, is faced with a herculean task in the formation of a full-fledged Cabinet. In the polls, his party returned with the largest tally, but fell just short of majority. The party totally won 15 seats in the 30–seat Assembly, but has only 14 seats since he had contested from two seats and won both of them. He has to now vacate one of them. He has been trying to woo the Congress, which has seven MLAs. But, the local leadership of the party is against a tie-up. Addressing a press conference, Congress leader and former Chief Minister V.Vaithialingam had clearly declared that the local unit of the party was not in favour of aligning with the AINRC. During his visit to the national capital, Mr. Rangasamy planned to meet Home Minister P.Chidambaram and other Central Ministers for discussion on developmental projects in Puducherry.
