The protesters, led by K. Ramakrishnan, general secretary, Periyar Dravida Kazhakam, tried to get past a strong posse of policemen to block trains. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and various traders' associations participated in the agitation.
