Special Correspondent
Time for rest:Bullock carts that were seized for carrying sand quarried illegally in Pudukottai on Wednesday.
PUDUKOTTAI: Illegal sand mining on the banks of the Vellar has been on the rise in the recent few weeks and the police, forest and revenue officials have tightened their vigil against the unauthorised transport of sand.
In a surprise raid conducted by the police and forest officials here in the early hours of Wednesday, a total of nine bullock carts laden with illicitly-quarried sand were seized.
While the Tirugokarnam police seized three bullock carts and handed over them to the Revenue Divisional Officers, the forest officials seized six bullock carts and imposed a fine of Rs.10, 000 on each owner before releasing the carts.
S. Karuppasamy, Forest Ranger, who effected the seizure, said that the Vellar bed was closely monitored. The problem of illicit transport of sand has surfaced only in the past one week, in the wake of the growing demand. The bullock cart owners sold the sand in various parts.
