PUDUKOTTAI: The municipality has drafted a proposal seeking an outlay of Rs. 75 lakh under the tourism development programme in the sprawling Pudhukulam area in the town.

The Pudhukulam tank, spread over 32 acres, encompasses three wards of the town and also provides adequate entertainment for the citizens.

Walkers are the largest beneficiaries of the Pudhukulam tank as it provides an opportunity for them to walk for a long distance on its embankment.

Although the municipality had taken some initiative in the past by setting up sheds at select places all around the circular banks of the tank and a boat club, the facilities are ill-maintained.

The only solace is that the municipal sanitary workers have been ensuring hygienic environment by clearing the garbage regularly, thereby protecting the tank from pollution.

Local residents say that the storage of water in the tank would stabilise the ground water table for a major part of the town.

However, the roof of rest-sheds battered by the heavy rains and strong winds; non-maintenance of boat club and the broken lights all around the banks of the tank testify to the neglected condition of the tank.

G. Balakrishnan, Municipal Commissioner, says that the municipality had drafted a comprehensive plan for developing the infrastructure at the tank.

A few cycle stands would be constructed in the tank. Further, toilet facility would also be provided; setting up of children's park and restoration of boat club by the purchase of two boats would be some of the facilities to be provided at Pudhukulam, he said.

Apart from the funds to be sanctioned by the Tourism Development Department, the municipality would also contribute its share for the development of the area. Street lights would ensure adequate safety to the visiting members of the public.
