HYDERABAD: The historic Akkanna Madanna Mahankali Temple, in the old city, is celebrating its annual Bonalu festival and ‘Mahankali Jathara' from July 15 to July 25. At a press conference on Wednesday, G Niranjan, president, temple committee said that the celebrations will start at 6 a.m on July 15 with ‘Kalasha Sthapana', and end on July 25 with a procession of the deity on elephant from the temple to Nayapul. The procession on July 25 will start at 3 p.m. Mr. Niranjan said that the main ‘Bonalu' festival will be celebrated from 7 a.m on July 24, and mass ‘Kum Kumarchana' will be held on all Fridays from July 8 to Aug 5 at Akkanna Madanna Prayer Hall, opposite to the temple. Mr. Niranjan also said that these annual celebrations helps in creating communal harmony, as even Muslim organisations contribute towards enhancing the festivities. Goodwill gesture He quoted the instance where the Nizam Trust, as a good will gesture, lent an elephant last year for the final day's procession. This elephant was otherwise reserved only for Muharram processions in the city, he said. Responding to a question about the possible congestion on the roads during the procession, Mr. Niranjan said that though the problem of congestion is there the procession will still follow the traditional route.
