PUDUKOTTAI: Fishermen of Kottaipattinam village, about 70 km from here, resorted to a one-day strike on Wednesday, in protest against the arrest of 23 fishermen of Rameswaram by the Sri Lankan navy.

They said that the frequent incidents of arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan naval personnel has been causing panic in the state. They sought immediate intervention by the Central and state government for the release of these fishermen.

A cross section of fishermen said that it was only around June 1 that the fishermen resumed their livelihood operation at the end of the 45-day ban on the use of mechanised boats and trawlers.

The action by the Sri Lankan naval personnel posed a hindrance to them and also deprived them of their security and safety to their life and property while fishing. They wanted a permanent solution to this recurring menace.

Fishermen of adjoining major villages, including Jegadapattinam, however, ventured into sea.

A total of 280 fishermen went on a day's strike, according to A. Jambunathan, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Pudukottai. He said that the fishermen would resume their normal schedule on Friday.
