BHELSIA delegation submits memorandum to government

TIRUCHI: A delegation of BHEL Small Industries' Association (BHELSIA) met Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday and sought government support for vital requirements of fabrication sector in the district.

In its memorandum, the BHELSIA requested the help of the Chief Minister to safeguard the interests of 28,000 workers employed directly and indirectly in its 458 units that supply components for manufacture of power equipment, by way of sparing them from the impact of power cuts.

The other requests listed in the memorandum included plea for categorisation of the 438 acre Industrial Estate at Thuvakudi, recognised worldwide as a fabrication hub, as an ‘Industrial Township'; grant of two acres free of cost in the industrial estate for the purposes of setting up a permanent training facility for workers, holding meetings, and creating an administrative set up for the association; and putting to productive use the unused land in the possession of Directorate of Industries that was meant for start of Electronics estate by handing it over to BHELSIA.

The association brought to the notice of the Chief Minister the advantages inherent in establishing a permanent trade centre in Tiruchi by virtue of its central location in the State for conduct of major exhibitions on the lines of the ones in Chennai and Coimbatore. For this purpose, the BHELSIA requested the Government to provide it 50 acres of land near the city at minimal cost.

As originally envisaged, the stretch between Ariyamangalam Palpannai to Thuvakudi has to be six-laned in view of the heavy increase in materials movement, the memorandum explained.

In a matter of five years, the number of its members has grown from 100 to 458, the BHELSIA stated in the memorandum submitted by its Vice-President A.R. Syed Arif, and Treasurer S. Paneerselvam.

The BHELSIA has received instruction to meet the Chief Minister at Chennai next month, the association president Rajappa Rajkumar said.
