Tapping solar power for city's energy needs

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: Kochi Corporation is keen on installing solar energy lamps in certain key areas with a view to reducing energy consumption. LED lamps are to be set up on MG road in the beginning. Entrepreneurs are expected to take part in the programme which could effectively reduce the spending by the local body. The programme of employing renewable energy based processes would enable the city to be considered under the solar city scheme of the union government.

A scheme to develop solar cities in 60 places in the country has been launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The programme assists urban local governments in preparation of a master plan for increasing energy efficiency and renewable energy supply in the city. Setting up institutional arrangements for the implementation of the master plan, awareness generation and capacity building activities are among the components of the programme. The programme aims at minimum 10 per cent reduction in projected demand of conventional energy at the end of five years, which can be achieved through a combination of energy efficiency measures and enhancing supply from renewable energy sources.

Out of this, 5 per cent will be from renewable energy sources.
