KOLKATA: The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), an electoral ally of the Trinamool Congress, wrote to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday demanding immediate withdrawal of joint security forces from the Maoist-affected Jangal Mahal region of the State. The party also called for withdrawal of “false cases” against activists and immediate release of political prisoners including Chhttradhar Mahato, convenor of the Maoist-backed Police Santrash Birodhi Janasadhaner Committee (PSBJC), in a letter written by SUCI(C) State Secretary, Saumen Basu. Demanding an impartial inquiry into all killings in Jangal Mahal, Mr. Basu called for immediate suspension of police officers who were allegedly involved in killings, rape and loot in the region over the past three years. In the letter Mr. Basu said that his party had not been invited to an all-party meeting to discuss issues that affect the region at the Lalgarh police station, where a resolution for retaining joint security forces was reportedly adopted. “As this resolution contradicts your electoral promise, we are drawing your attention to it and hoping for your intervention in the matter,” Mr. Basu said. Mr. Bose also asked the Chief Minister to take adequate steps to ensure implementation of Central laws protecting the rights of people living in the forests as well as providing subsidies on food and kerosene for them.
