Thiruvananthapuram: Even as the district health authorities have managed to control the spurt of malaria cases in the Vizhinjam coastal area, long-term solution to avoid similar episodes of the infection seems remote. At a meeting of district health officials and the Corporation's health standing committee here on Tuesday to review the malaria situation at Vizhinjam, the health officers said the area would continue to be the hot spot for various mosquito and water-borne infectious diseases unless a permanent solution was evolved for the problem of acute water scarcity in the area. Huge water storage containers in households remained the primary sources for vector-breeding as these vessels were kept open. People were reluctant to throw away the water even though the threat of vector breeding was pointed out to them. Health officials said if a system of safe piped water supply could not be provided in the region, then at least arrangements be made for the distribution of safe water free-of-cost.
