Manholes to be brought to road level

Special Correspondent

Traffic police identify 450 sites where manhole covers are either above or below the road surface

HYDERABAD: GHMC Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu on Wednesday said immediate road patch works would be taken up near all the manhole covers to keep them on par with the existing road level.

The traffic police had identified 450 such sites where the manhole covers were either above or below the road surface leading to mishaps at times fatal as it had happened on Tuesday at Mehdipatnam.

Long term solutions were being worked out to prevent inundations at 14 junctions like KCP, Model House, Maitrivanam, Alugadda Bavi, Villa Marie, Chief Minister's Camp Office, Kalaniketan, Yosufguda, Ranigunj, Karbala Maidan- Gangabowli, and Lal Bungalow.

GHMC will take up restoration works of all roads within its limits in coordination with other civic departments. The issue of perennial overflowing sewer lines at Alugadda Bavi is to be tackled with the help of railway authorities by connecting it to the main line.

Tenders have been called for taking up traffic improvement works at a cost of Rs.25 crore in Hyderabad and Cyberabad police limits.

Storm water drains

Later, Mr. Krishna Babu inspected some of the storm water drains at Secunderabad, Imlibun, and Begum Bazar along with HMWSSB Managing Director Jagadeeshwar and said the GHMC was determined to repair them at any cost. Housing would be taken up for all the affected families in consultation with the district Collectorate in phases and some lands have been identified for the purpose.

Meanwhile, temporary rehabilitation steps will also be taken up for the encroachers with the help of public representatives. SWD (‘nalas') widths are to be decided by analysing five years rainfall data and consulting all the stakeholders concerned including engineers and contractors doing the works.

Twelve of 15 contractors are ready to take up the packages and site disputes will be settled soon for speeding up the works.
