MADURAI: In a sudden development, the Registrar in-charge of Madurai Kamaraj University, V. Alagappan, has been replaced on Tuesday. M. Rajiakodi, presently the Controller of Examinations, has been given additional charge as per the orders received from Higher Education Secretary R. Kannan who is also the Convenor of the Convenors' Committee that is looking after the routine administration of the university since a Vice-Chancellor is yet to be appointed. Official sources told The Hindu on Wednesday that the sudden change of Dr. Alagappan, who was the Registrar in-charge for the past 13 months, came as a surprise since the varsity staff have been waiting to get a regular Registrar anytime. “The order dated June 20 came from Chennai and Dr. Rajiakodi has taken over. I am going back to the university's Department of Commerce as Professor and Head,” Dr. Alagappan said when contacted. Farewell organised A farewell and felicitation meeting was organised on the MKU campus for Dr. Alagappan and Dr. Rajiakodi in which Syndicate members participated. Routine administation The new Registrar in-charge and Controller of Examinations, Dr. Rajiakodi, said that the Higher Education Secretary had asked him to look after the routine administration without going into any policy matters. Dr. Alagappan had served as Registrar for a three-year term in 2003-06 and he is due to retire in June next year. The university is also eagerly awaiting the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor by the new Government since the term of R. Karpaga Kumaravel got over on April 20. Code of conduct Selection process of a new VC could not be taken up immediately due to the code of conduct that was announced for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Officials said that the post of Additional Controller of Examinations too had been vacant now as one professor is holding additional charge. The School of Business Studies has also come into the picture as official orders were issued two days back appointing R. Jayaraman, Professor and Head, Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, as the Chairperson with effect from July 1.
