ALAPPUZHA: The Kerala Boat Club Association (KBCA) has decided to hold a novel protest in the State capital on June 24, raising various demands including extension of sportsperson benefits to boat race participants. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, KBCA general secretary S.M. Iqbal said the Leader of Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan would inaugurate a march and dharna in front of the Secretariat. The protest, which would be marked by the absence of slogans, but with the presence of the ‘vanchipattu' and a turnout of hundreds of boat race participants with oars, was intended to draw the attention of the Government to the various demands of the association, he said. These included the extension of benefits given to all sportspersons, since boat races had been declared a sports event by the government; grants for nurturing boat clubs; organisation of district and State-level boat races; financial assistance to all boat races in the State; adding ‘vanchipattu' as an item in all arts festivals from school to university level. KBCA president P.I. Abraham and joint secretaries K.A. Pramod and K Raghu were also present.
