BANGALORE: The proposal before Bangalore University (BU) to scrap some courses that are not in demand continues to ruffle more feathers as the Bhugola Shastra Adhyapakara Kriya Samithi (Geography Teachers' Working Committee), Bangalore, has registered its protest. Geography is one of the subjects on the verge of being scrapped as per the recommendation of the committee constituted by the university. The committee, headed by M. Siddananda, an officer on special duty at the university's examination branch, submitted the proposal before the Academic Council earlier this month to do away with “obsolete courses”. Questioning the authenticity of the claims of the committee that Geography is being offered only in five undergraduate colleges, the samithi, in a release, said it is an important subject that cannot be taken away from the curriculum. If it is scrapped at the undergraduate level, will the same be done in the competitive exams in which the subject is an option, the samithi asked. Students' rights It is the right of students to choose what subjects they want to study, and the proposal takes away this right from them by not offering it, the release said. The samithi said that it was the duty of the university to facilitate the study of and research in various disciplines, and criticised the decision to rid of some disciplines solely on the basis of financial considerations.
