THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has begun destroying the general and higher education sectors within one month of coming to power, Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has said. In a statement on Wednesday, he compared the No-objection-Certificates (NoC) being issued by the government for starting new CBSE and ICSE schools, to a telecom company's offer to provide telephone connection as soon as the applicant remitted the fee and submitted the application. NoCs were said to be assured for all applicants if they had the land and the building for a school. Large-scale corruption was obvious behind the issue, he said. Of the 12,642 schools in the State, 863 were in the self financing sector and of them, 322 were allowed during the previous UDF government's period. Majority of the remaining schools were also allowed by the UDF government of 1982-87. Other States did not have half the number of schools in the self-financing sector. He alleged a devious move to destroy government schools and Malayalam medium schools behind the sanctioning of self-financing schools. The LDF government had decided to make Malayalam the first language and a compulsory subject in all schools. Now, there seemed to be a move to not only scuttle that decision but also close down all Malayalam medium schools within five years, he said.
