Tackle ill effects of global warming: PT
Staff Reporter
Tuticorin: No measures had been taken to tackle the ill effects of global warming. Sterlite and thermal power plants “were polluting” the entire district, said K. Krishnasamy, founder-president of Puthiya Tamilagam.
Water bodies in Koramballam had been polluted by discharge of effluents from the Sterlite , he alleged. Besides, some upcoming power plants here were tapping groundwater illegally, which was meant for consumption, the leader said. Under improper representations, permits had been accorded to such new power plants by the authorities. “While people of the coastal villages across the district are feeling thirsty of drinking water, some emerging power plant companies are tapping drinking water meant for the public. Primarily, water resources should be accessible to people and farmers for agriculture. Industrial growth stands only secondary. The district administration should not permit such companies to commit wrongdoings,” he said.
