KOLLAM: A bus carrying students to a school at Kalayapuram near Kottarakara caught fire at Injakkal junction on Wednesday morning. Timely intervention of local people averted a major disaster. In the rush to get out of the bus, two students were injured. The police said that the engine of the bus caught fire when the driver applied sudden brakes. Eyewitnesses said that when smoke started emanating from the bus, the teachers and the attendant ran out of it leaving the students behind. It was at this juncture that the local residents came to the rescue of the children. The people doused the fire immediately. They said that the bus having a capacity to carry 30 students was packed with about 70 students at the time of the accident. The injured were identified as Amal and Girisankar. Amal suffered burns and Girisankar lost two teeth.
