TIRUCHI: The Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) S. George has instructed law enforcers to continue their drive against illegal sand mining in the Central Zone. The ADGP who convened a meeting with top police officers of the Central Zone and Tiruchi City here on Wednesday to review matters regarding law and order and crime, also directed the law enforcers to identify all major operators who were behind illegal sand mining and initiate stringent legal action against them. The meeting was attended by the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone K.C. Mahali, Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi E. Ma. Masanamuthu, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi Range A. Amalraj, Superintendents of Police of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Karur, Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. The ADGP emphasised on police action against illegal sand mining which was rampant in districts especially Karur, Tiruchi and Thanjavur. During crackdowns against this illegal activity, as many as 400 cases were registered and 286 vehicles seized including lorries and earthmovers. Legal action Mr. George instructed the officers to initiate legal action against those indulging in land grabbing and evicting people by intimidation and using muscle power. He directed the officers to identify such persons and book cases as and when complaints were received and take all efforts to restore properties to the rightful owners. The ADGP asked the officers to take effective preventive measures such as regular vehicle checks and better use of mobile patrols to check road accidents. Crime cases With respect to crime cases, Thanjavur accounted for high numbers of property offences with over 1,300 cases reported during 2010. Reviewing the crime cases, the ADGP stressed the need for studying the reasons for high crime rate in Thanjavur district in order to initiate appropriate crime prevention measures.
