Conservancy workers demand parity in wage

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: Conservancy workers deployed on contractual basis by Udumalpet municipality thronged the Collectorate recently to highlight the disparity in wages disbursed to them vis-à-vis the scales drawn by their counterparts in other municipalities in the district.

In a memorandum submitted to the district administration, the workers pointed out that despite the district administration had enhanced the wages of conservancy workers in the district from Rs. 100 a day to Rs. 120 a day in January and implemented the order with retrospective effect from April 1, 2010, the Udumalpet municipal officials were still disbursing only Rs 100 a day to them.

Hike

“It should be noted that the municipalities like Nallur and 15 Velampalayam had swiftly hiked the wages and even disbursed the arrears within no mean time to the workers,” CITU-affiliated Tirupur District Rural Development Workers Sangam secretary K. Rangaraj said.

The workers also pleaded with the district administration to take steps for absorbing the entire 104 conservancy workers on contract in Udumalpet municipality into permanent payroll.

The revenue officials told the workers that the matter would be looked into on its merits.
